3 workflow factors that make a Sedimentologist happy

George Jones is an ExploCrowd Associated Specialist (Sedimentology)

After working with ExploCrowd for about a year, I find the work environment both positive and productive. As a Sedimentologist, I have been pleasantly surprised by how the integration of new methods with existing structured data results in an efficient and logical workflow – leading to better results.

Here are some thoughts on the matter, which hopefully can inspire both Sedimentologists and scientists from other disciplines in their way of work.

1. When the data is ready – the work is done faster

This is a simple yet crucial factor when working with sedimentology. In some of my earlier work engagements, I spent up to 80 percent of my time finding and cleaning up data. In ExploCrowd, I never have to chase it. The team is small and organized, and the map, image, or other data I need is always ready. The consequence of having the data ready to go is that I can concentrate on my technical work! This gives me plenty of time to study, evaluate and find new ideas to share.

2. Sharing makes everything more interesting

Teamwork in ExploCrowd means a low threshold for sharing. In addition to easy data access, we share interesting findings and ideas within the team. With everyone open and ready to share, the workflow is faster. A great example is the dialogue I’ve had with the biostratigrapher where I was able to fully understand the uncertainties in his interpretation.

3. Integration is the way forward

As a Sedimentologist, I’m used to burying deep into the details. Still, I know the value of the big picture – with the integration of different disciplines. Organizations that don’t prioritize integrations may end up doing interpretation in the wrong order, with the risk of missing important information. In ExploCrowd, specialists from different disciplines work closely to build the picture piece by piece. In addition to being logical and increasing the chances of valuable discoveries, the collaboration across disciplines also makes the work more interesting from and makes me a better all-rounder geoscientist.

For example: In a recent integrated regional exclusive study for a client, we incorporated different data sets and structural information, in addition to using new technology provided by PaleoScan. With this method, turning every stone to look for important details, we pulled together a new and valuable perspective.
